I'll never forget that day. I had never noticed that my baby was different from other children. I had been a mother for 2 years before he was born. I would have noticed. I was a full time mom. He was just a cranky baby. Thats what the doctor said. Boys don't talk as soon as girls. Some babies cry more than others.

He was born on a warm spring day. He had ten fingers and ten toes. He weighed 8 lbs 10 oz and was 21 1/2 inches long. All of this despite the fact that he was 15 days early. He was my big strong boy. After all, Jennie had only weighed 5 lbs 7 oz and Jessie had only weighed 4 lbs 12 oz. This baby was so healthy.

I'll never forget that day. I sat down in front of 7 strangers and they took turns going around the room and describing his behaviors that were not "normal". "He won't look anyone in the eye". Why hadn't I noticed? "He will only parallel play with other kids". Of course, he's a boy and he has sisters. "He is different. We don't know why, but he's not right. We think that he has PDD-NOS".

That's the day that started my journey into this world called autism.
