The Lee's Summit Autism Support Group emerged in late November 2006. There were two parents involved getting the group started. Sherri Tucker is the mother of a 15-year-old son, Jake. He has been diagnosed with Kanner's Syndrome/Early Infantile Autism. Debra Shaumeyer is the mother of a 6-year-old son. Austin has been diagnosed with Classic Autism. The moms met over the Internet while networking on listserve for parents of children with disabilities. After networking together for nearly a year, Sherri and Debbie saw the need to form a support group for parents in the Lee's Summit School District with children on the Autism spectrum. Currently there are over 250 families in Lee's Summit with children on the Autism Spectrum. Presently, about 98 of them have an educational diagnosis of autism./asd. The two envisioned families coming together and working with the Lee's Summit School District to ensure that not only gifted children, but also all children receive the education that they are entitled to.
While the group is made up of mostly families that are affected by autism, the group is open all families that need help. The group might not have a lot of information on other disabilities, they focus more on special education and the information that they can provide applies to all disabilities.
The group was initially formed for families in Leeâs Summit, but they have had families from all school districts join them. They want to be a group that can help families all over the metro Kansas City area ensure that their child receives the free and appropriate education that they are federally entitled to.
The groupâs main focus is to ensure that NO CHILD IS LEFT BEHIND!
